4. a biography of your explorer.
Our explorer, Sir Frances Drake, was born in Tavistock, Devon and was the oldest of all of his twelve brothers. Sir Frances Drake had gotten his name from his godfather Francis Russel, 2nd Earl of Bedford. Sir Frances Drakes father, Edmund Drake, was a farmer and later became a preacher. He was also the husband of Mary Mylwaye. Sir Frances Drake was often mixed up with his nephew John Drake. John Drake was the son of Edmund Drakes older brother. In 1549 his family was forced to leave their home town and they fled to Kent. In Drake's early ages he worked aboard ships and was a normal sailor. At the age of twenty he took charge of a ship. In his later years Drake was sent by Queen Elizabeth to start an expedition against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of America. Unfortunately the weather was really bad and they had to retreat to Plymouth for repair. He had many other interesting journeys with many different ships. One of the most exciting adventures was when he captured a Spanish ship which had riches from Peru. They got 25, 000 pesos of pure gold which is equal to about 7 million English modern pounds. They also gave chase to the Cacafuego and soon caught it. They got 80 pounds of gold, a gold crucifix, jewels, 13 chests full of royals of plate and 26 tons of silver. He ended his life, a rich man, in 1596
